Who actually makes the drawings

A production-ready drawing or 3D model comes from a few kinds of people, depending on how far along your idea is:

• Design and mechanical engineers handle the engineering: material choice, tolerances, and design for manufacturability, and produce the CAD and drawings a shop can quote from.
• Industrial and product designers work earlier, on form, function and the concept itself.
• CAD designers and drafters turn a sketch or concept into a clean 2D drawing and a 3D model.
• Reverse engineering (3D scanning to CAD) recreates a drawing from an existing part when the original is long gone.
